Artist Statement
My subject matter, materials and processes are all closely linked to light, time, and the environment. There is an essential relationship between the themes addressed by my work and the act of their being made. I’m excited by photography in its most basic and immediate form - the action of light upon a surface over a specific duration of time. I enjoy the way that a photograph - especially a pinhole image or a simple photogram - can reveal an otherwise overlooked narrative, capturing the essence of a situation or event that’s not-quite-tangible to an observer in ‘real’ time or from a human perspective. I’m interested in how nonhuman elements can alter and/or co-create an artwork. For example, my photographic prints made using plant matter as their subject, are often exposed outdoors over long periods of time. The result is inevitably affected by moisture evaporating, chemicals from the plants themselves and the action of rain seeping in around the edges of the contact frame. My textile work is informed by my photographic practice, and my woven pieces are a record of the very specific time periods and environments in which they were created.
